Facts about the Inventor, Gholam Peyman, and the invention of LASIK ***
Fact 1: Who invented LASIK? LASIK was invented by Gholam Peyman in
1985 during the Technology and Information Age of inventions. LASIK is a very
important addition to advancements made in the area of
Medicine in the field of eye surgery.
Fact 2: Who invented LASIK? The Iranian-American inventor of LASIK, Gholam Peyman,
was born in Shiraz, Iran in 1937.
Fact 3: Who invented LASIK? The early years of LASIK
inventor Gholam Peyman were spent in Shiraz, Iran where he was raised by his family.
Gholam Peyman was educated at high school.
Fact 4: Who invented LASIK? As a teenager his family moved to Germany
where Gholam Peyman attended the University of Freiburg where he recieved
his MD degree as a Doctor of Medicine.
Fact 5: Who invented LASIK? Gholam Peyman began his internship at
St. Johannes Hospital in Diusberg, Germany in 1964 and in 1965 moved to
America to complete his internship at Passaic General Hospital in Passaic,
New Jersey in 1965.
Fact 6: Who invented LASIK? Dr. Peyman returned to Germany in 1969
to complete his residency in ophthalmology and a retina fellowship at
the University of Essen.
Fact 7: Who invented LASIK? After completing his studies Dr. Gholam
Peyman received an appointment at Neuroscience Center of Excellence at
the Louisiana State University Medical University and in 2006 became
Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona.
Fact 8: Who invented LASIK? The respected retina surgeon Dr. Gholam
Peyman was also destined to become a prolific and successful inventor
who, to date, been granted 174 US Patents. His most famous invention is
the vision correction procedure known as LASIK, short for for
Laser-Assisted in-situ Keratomileusis.
Fact 9: Who invented LASIK? His invention began with his
mounting interest in the possibility of using CO2 lasers to modify
corneal refraction. The development of the excimer laser (a form of
ultraviolet laser) increased the likely success of such a procedure.
Fact 10: Who
invented LASIK? Dr. Gholam Peyman worked on his idea which would
result in the invention of LASIK and in 1989, Gholam Peyman was granted
a US patent for using an excimer laser to modify corneal curvature. (The
cornea accounts for approximately two-thirds of the eye's total optical
power). LASIK used 'keratomileusis', the medical term for the surgical
reshaping of the cornea.
Fact 11: Who
invented LASIK? In the LASIK surgical procedure the cornea (the
clear layer forming the front of the eye) is flapped open and the
exposed cornea is reshaped by the laser to correct either
nearsightedness or farsightedness. The flap is then replaced, without
sutures (stitches), to heal back into position.
Fact 12: Who
invented LASIK? Prior the LASIK procedure the patient is given an
antibiotic and a local anesthetic that is used to numb the surface of
the eye (the patient is awake during the surgery). Local anesthesia
lasts for a short period of time and is often used for minor procedures
as opposed to General anesthesia which keeps the patient completely
unconscious but carries additional risks. The procedure, using local
anesthesia, allows the patient to have the surgery and go home that same
Fact 13: Who
invented LASIK? On February 19, 2013 Dr. Gholam Peyman recieved the
National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barack Obama
and is one of the small number of ophthalmologists inducted into the
Hall of Fame of Ophthalmology.
Fact 14: Who
invented LASIK? The LASIK procedure involving refractive surgery had
its limitations including cornea implant rejection. In 2015 Gholam
Peyman invented a new procedure, called MESIK that eliminated most of
the shortcomings of refractive surgery and the rejection of implants.
Fact 15 - Impact: How did LASIK impact the world? The impact of the invention of
LASIK made a lasting contributions to the quality of life and helped
strengthen technological, medical innovations in America.
