American Civil War Inventions - Weapons: The attention of the American inventors during the Industrial Revolution was dominated by the American Civil War (1861 - 1865) and the invention of new weapons. American Civil War Inventions included aerial reconnaissance using the hot air balloon, Ironclads, Submarines, Under-water Mines, Limelights, Rockets and Rocket launchers, Machine Guns / Gatling Guns, Hand Grenades and the Minie Ball.

Civil War Inventions - The Inventors: The names of the major weapon inventors during the American Civil War were Thaddeus Lowe, Horace Lawson Hunley, Matthew Fontaine Maury, Richard J. Civil War Inventions - Minie Ball (1855): The invention of the Minie Ball, a highly destructive bullet fired from a rifle, was made in 1855 by the French inventor Claude Etienne Minie.

Civil War Inventions - Ironclad (1862): The invention of the Ironclad was made in 1862 by the American inventor John Ericsson who pioneered the building of the USS Monitor that revolutionized the building of old, wooden ships by covering them with iron and steel .    

Civil War Inventions - Submarine (1860): The famous Confederate Submarine, the Hunley, was developed by the inventor and marine engineer Horace Lawson Hunley in 1860 by converting a steam boiler into a submarine.

Civil War Inventions - Spar-Torpedo (1864): The invention of the Spar-Torpedo was made in 1864 when the Hunley submarines were armed with a spar-torpedo made from a bomb with a charge attached to the end that was propelled at the end of a long pole.

Civil War Inventions - Under-water Mine (1861): The invention of the Under-water Mine was made in 1861 by the American inventor Matthew Fontaine Maury and used to great effect at the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864.

Civil War Inventions - Land Mine (1862): The invention of the Land Mine was made in 1862 by the American General Gabriel J. Rains.

Civil War Inventions - Limelights (1863): The invention of Limelights  (chemical lamps that used super-heated balls of lime to create an incandescent glow) were put to good use in 1863 by the American General Quincy Adams Gillmore. The Limelights successfully illuminated artillery targets and causing problems to Confederate riflemen who were temporarily blinded by the light. Limelights were also used as signalling devices.

Civil War Inventions - Rocket launchers (1860): The invention of Rocket launchers was made in 1860 but were are unsuccessful  as they were highly inaccurate in targetting.

Civil War Inventions - Aerial Reconnaissance (1860): The invention of Aerial Reconnaissance was made in 1860 by the American inventor Professor Thaddeus Lowe who persuaded the military to use Hot Air Balloons for Aerial Reconnaissance.

Civil War Inventions - Gatling Guns (1861): The invention of Gatling Guns was made in 1861 by the American inventor Dr. Richard J. Gatling. The Gatlings were six-barreled guns that were capable of firing up to 350 rounds per minute.

Assistant secretary of war, Andrew Carnegie, organized the military telegraph system. The first Telegraph message ever sent was made by Samuel Morse on May 24, 1844.
