Definition of an App: An App is defined as the shortened term or abbreviation for 'Application' which is a small, self contained computer or software program, now commonly designed to be downloaded by a user to a mobile device. An 'App' can run on the Internet, on a personal computer, a tablet or on a mobile phone.

What is an App? Applications were invented at the same time as computers but the term 'App' is now synonymous with wireless devices such as a tablet or the Smartphone (a mobile phone (cell phone) that perform the functions of a telephone and a personal computer.

Phone apps / Mobile apps: Phone apps or Mobile apps were developed in the 1990's and are accessed by tapping an icon on the homescreen, or start screen, of a smartphone or tablet. This allows instant access to a program or website without the need to search for a program or key in the address of a website. Phone apps or Mobile apps have a vast range of uses enabling people to play games, get directions, access banking, news and weather.
